IF you are the kind of guy who uses spreadsheets to keep track of potential online-dating interests….

….then you probably shouldn’t tell anyone, least of all one of the girls ON the spreadsheet. She’ll probably forward it to all her New York friends, who will forward to all their New York friends and it will probably end up on Gawker. That said, you can’t really fault the guy for being organized. You can fault him for being an idiot.

Science: “online dating sites won’t find your soulmate for you”

Attention online daters (and prospective online daters)! Science has offered a new insight into online dating sites’ claims that they can find you a compatible match through their algorithms: apparently, it’s bogus.

According to a soon-to-be published study in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, just because the algorithm says you’ll be compatible with someone, that doesn’t mean you will be. It just means you share the same interests. Compatibility, meaning how well you get along is, for now, unpredictable, so you’re better off going on random online dates, as opposed to seeking “matches”.

But if you were looking for your ideal mate online, it doesn’t take a big psychology study to tell you that it’s gonna take awhile….
