For decades, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has been baptizing the non-Mormon dead, mostly Jews, into their Church, offering them a chance at eternal salvation. The ritual, often called “proxy-baptism”, is merely symbolic and is highly connected to the Church’s work at creating a genealogical tree for all of humanity. I am certain that I am wrong, but I imagine the process works something like this:
- Find Jewish corpse.
- Ask it if it wants to join the LDS Church.
- Grab its head and make it nod in consent.
- PRESTO! They’re now Mormon. See you at the TCBY in Heaven! (Are those still around? That was some good froyo.)
